Processional chariots are an integral part of temple and public life in South India. Located in Chennai, the Kapaleeshwarar Temple is one of the most revered and popular shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The annual ten-day festival attracts thousands of devotees. On the seventh day, a magnificent procession takes place, as the temple chariot is brought out. In the morning, women gather to cover the streets with intricate kolam patterns, while crowds of barefoot men begin to pull the enormous chariot, its wheels rising to the height of a person.
Pulling and pushing the chariot is an act of collective penance and personal devotion, a spiritual path towards liberation. This mesmerizing spectacle — the movement of a ritual chariot propelled solely by the strength of countless devotees — inspired me to create this design.
